Hispanic Studies

at the UniverCity of Augsburg

junto a Augusta (DQ II, 54)

Hispanism and Augsburg are bound since early modern times:

Genius Loci

As former imperial city and historic center for bookselling and publishing, and through its patrician families, the World Heritage City of Augsburg has been closely linked to the expansion of the Spanish Empire since 16th Century: a legacy that requires special decolonial awareness and reflection in situ.

50 Years of Hispanic Commitment

The first congress of the German Association of Hispanic Studies was held at the University of Augsburg in February 1977. The XXV anniversary will take place ibidem in March 2027.

40 Years of Transdisciplinary Iberian American Studies

Together with the 1986 founded ISLA Institute of Iberian and Latin American Studies, Augsburg’s Ibero-Romance Studies have been contributing ever since to innovative learning, teaching, and research programs in the fields of Information Culture, Urbanism, Environmental Humanities, etc., funded by external grants, and promoting Iberian American Studies beyond the region.

Unique Study Programs

Augsburg Ibero-Romance Studies coordinate worldwide unique study programs, namely: Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies (MA), Interdisciplinary European Cultural History (MA), and Urban Cultures (MA).

Top Teacher Training

The University of Augsburg offers a first-rate Spanish teacher training program, including subject-specific pedagogy, which, in collaboration with the ZLbiB Center for Teacher Education and Interdisciplinary Educational Research, provides future teachers with practical, up-to-date training.

Premodern Actualitas

As board members and directors of relevant institutes and collaborative research projects, Augsburg’s Iberian American Studies share a particular focus on early modern topics and textures from a decidedly transatlantic perspective.
